Early in the year 2000 Sandberg began working with an INTERIOR space. Shaped like a dome, encapsulating
what he termed the "3 Necessities for modern life: the TELEVISION(or MONITOR) for information/entertainment,
REFRIGERATOR for sustenance and storage, and the CHAIR for comfort." These Western Culture techno -
bubbles form a stage-like atmosphere for the artist to insert new ideas and concepts much like a set in theatre.
The nearly transparent forms allow the viewer to see inside this virtual space. Sandberg claims "Now, no
other space would make sense to paint." The environment is populated only by "The Severed Leg," the last
chunk of humanity, an icon of the atrophy of society and the conflict of the individual and mass media culture.

The Severed Leg: Platforms in Terminal Cultures
(NOTE: THIS IS ALL HYPOTHETICAL)
The Severed Leg is the representation of the 'last leg' of humanity. This organic fragment is still living yet in a
mediated and dependent manner - isolated by apathy. Today limbs atrophy from disuse, while mechanical and
electronic arms do the work - humans are nearly obsolete. We have been out evolved by our own inventive ability.
Computers do work faster and without error. We are clumsy and lose focus. Craving emotion and filled with desires
as we stumble about, we are as a culture -that leg- as a whole now separated in our private isolation of
convenience. Every whim fulfilled. Why walk or drive to the store; call for delivery or shop on-line. Pay the bills by
computer. Communicate by video conference and e-mail. We are becoming islands of our warped intentions.
Instead of human interaction digital interaction, mediation is preferred. Electro-voyeurs? We are followed in public
by the watchful cyclops-eye of surveillance. Watching (as we do TV and on computers ourselves) Neutered by
technology, actual sex is often inconvenient or risky, the illusion of sex is what is important. From tabloid glossy
photos of stars and bombshells, a new pretty face every week. Or if we consider the internet, total fantasy, 'sex' can
be with anyone anytime the mind or the wallet is the limit. Multiplied by the use of Prozac and other easily attainable
sensory numbing legal narcotics and pharmaceuticals, drugs no longer used for mental expansion or sensory
overload but to dampen and block out the need or desire to be human.
Work harder, faster
Sleep better
Don't worry
Relieve the heart-burn
Feel happy
Forget your impulse
Lose weight
End the pain
Gain confidence
People search for robots of the future, dream of the day artificial life will supplement our own.
Somehow we have found this future not in a metallic suit with electronic guts, but become it ourselves.
Technological by-products of our own achievements, a shadow of ourselves? Programmed to continue work and
production, finishing tasks without question. Accepting orders delivered in mass media to an automatic culture set
on comfortably watching the future unfold.....
